Women's Basketball Opens Season at Teammates For Life Tip-off Tournament

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Manchester University women's basketball competed at the Teammates for Life Tip-off Tournament over the weekend, taking on Westminster College and host Kalamazoo College to open the 2023-24 season.

Westminster 67, Manchester 52
  • In the opening game of the tournament on Saturday, November 11, the Spartans fell to the Titans by a final score of 67-52. 
  • Westminster outscored the Spartans 48-29 in the first half of Saturday's game. Despite outscoring Westminster 13-6 with a 10-0 run to close out Saturday's game, the Spartans would fall short against the Titans by a final score of 67-52.
  • Sophomore Mia Shields led the Black and Gold with 13 points, shooting .600 from the field and .750 from behind the three-point arc in just 17 minutes of action. 
  • Madison Stamm added 11 points in the season opener. Stamm went 4-12 from the field and 3-9 from three-point range on Saturday. 
  • Kinsey Atkins and Madysen Rees each had two steals on the afternoon. 
  • Jay'ana Blakely pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
  • Up 23-12 after the first quarter, Westminster's lead swelled to 19 (48-29) going into halftime. Arison knocked down three three-pointers in the period. The Titans stretched their lead to 22 (61-39) after three before going up by as many as 25 (67-42) in the fourth. The Spartans closed the game on a 10-0 run.

Manchester 70, Kalamazoo 68 
  • During Sunday's consolation game against the Kalamazoo Hornets, Manchester hung on for a 70-68 victory. 
  • The Black and Gold led 21-16 after the first quarter, but Kalamazoo's 25-11 advantage in the second quarter gave the Hornets a 41-32 lead at the half. The Spartans tacked on 22 more points in the third quarter while holding Kalamazoo to just seven points, giving Manchester a 54-48 lead going into the final quarter of Sunday's game. Manchester led by as many as eight before Kalamazoo cut the deficit to one with 2:15 left on the clock. After a back-and-forth battle in the remaining two minutes of the game, Manchester would hang on to take Sunday's game by a final score of 70-68.
  • Manchester shot 43.3% during the game and 36.8% from three-point range. As a team, the Spartans pulled down 27 rebounds and scored 27 points off turnovers.
  • Hailee Kline led the Spartans with 13 points, following by Mia Shields with 12 points and Madison Stamm with 10. Jay'ana Blakely  had four steals on the afternoon, while Kendal Rider led with five assists and four rebounds.
Madison Stamm (Fortville, Ind., Anderson Prep) was named to the All-Tournament team after finishing the weekend with 21 points, shooting .286 from three-point range in 59 minutes of action. 

Up next, Manchester women's basketball will travel to Adrian, Mich. for a non-conference matchup against the Adrian Bulldogs on Saturday, November 18. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
