NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Spartans improved to 3-2 on the season after a 74-64 overtime victory against the visiting Kalamazoo College Hornets on Saturday, November 25.
Kalamazoo tied the score at 14 apiece with 3:29 on the clock as the Spartans and Hornets battled for control in the opening quarter of play. Manchester would hold off Kalamazoo for a 19-14 lead going into the second quarter, where the Hornets would outscore the Spartans 18-8 for a 32-27 lead at halftime.
The Spartans would cut the Hornets' lead to just two to end the third quarter. Manchester would continue to battle as the fourth quarter saw five lead changes and a 60-58 score in favor of the Hornets with just twelve seconds on the clock. Manchester senior guard
Madison Stamm (Fortville, Ind., Anderson Prep) made a two-point shot in the paint with seven seconds left to tie the score at 60. A steal by
Kinsey Atkins (Warsaw, Ind., Triton) would stop Kalamazoo from scoring and send the game overtime.
The Black and Gold shot 66.67% during the overtime period as they scored 14 points while holding the Hornets to just four points en route to a 74-64 victory.
Three Spartans scored in double digits during Saturday's game.
Maddi Smith (Kewanna, Ind., Caston) lead Manchester with 21 points and nine rebounds, followed by
Madison Stamm with 13 points and five rebounds.
Jay'ana Blakely (Westville, Ind., Marquette Catholic) added 11 points, while
Kinsey Atkins had nine points on the afternoon.
Atkins and
Hailee Kline (Huntington, Ind., Blackhawk Christian) had a team-high three steals apiece.
Kaelyn Arlington led the Hornets with 16 points, followed by Ruby Hogan with 15 points and Jackie Brines with 10 points. Jordan Wesaw pulled down eight rebounds for Kalamazoo. Following Saturday's loss, Kalamazoo is now 0-4 on the season.
