Tourney Time: Manchester Battles Rose-Hulman in HCAC Semifinals

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Manchester University men's basketball team will host the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Semifinal round on Friday, February 24. The semifinal and final rounds of the men's championship will be held in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on the campus of Manchester University.

GAME NOTES: 
  • The Spartans are seeking their first HCAC Tournament title since the 2010-11 season and second title since their three-peat from 1992-95. 
  • The Fightin' Engineers are seeking their first HCAC Tournament title since their three-peat from 2012 to 2014. 
  • Rose-Hulman swept the season series this season, defeating the Spartans by final scores of 82-79 and 93-92. 
  • After leading Manchester to a 16-9 regular season record this season, a 14-4 mark in league play and a share of the conference regular season title for the first time since 2020-11, head coach Nate Conley was voted as the 2023 HCAC Coach of the Year.
  • Sophomore guard/forward Logan Willoughby earned All-Conference First Team accolades, while teammates Bryant Smith and Zach Sawyer were named Second Team and sophomore Quentez Columbus Honorable Mention.
  • Willoughby finished the regular season averaging 16.3 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game, finishing the season with 325 points and 104 rebounds. Willoughby shot 45.3% from the field, 40.0% from three-point range, and 81.6% from the free throw line this season. He scored 20 or more points five times this season, scoring double figures in 17 games he appeared in. Willoughby also ranks in the conference in rebounding, field goal percentage, free throw percentage, three-point field goals per game, three-point percentage, assists, assists/turnover ratio, and steals. 
  • Smith finished the regular season with 393 points, averaging 16.4 points per game and shooting 42.2% from the field, 41.9% from three-point range, and 81.0% from the free throw line.
  • Sawyer has netted 322 paints this season and 123 rebounds, leading the Spartans with 16.9 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game, and 21 steals per game. Sawyer finished the season leading the HCAC in field goal percentage, shooting 60.1% from the field.
  • Columbus averages 12.9 points per game and 3.6 assists per game this season for the Spartans.
  • Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Miles McGowen earned first-team all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors, and Max Chaplin captured honorable mention recognition, in teams determined by league coaches and released on Wednesday.
  • McGowen averages 12.7 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game for a Rose-Hulman.
  • Chaplin enters the HCAC Semifinals with career totals of 809 points and 128 three-point field goals made.
