Spartans Complete Three-Game Series Sweep Against Bluffton

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Manchester baseball team completed a three-game series sweep against conference opponent Bluffton University on Wednesday, April 19. 

The Spartans hosted the Beavers on Gratz Field on Saturday, April 15 for an HCAC doubleheader. The Black and Gold took game one by a final score 11-10 before taking game two 7-2. 

Manchester and Bluffton completed their three-game series on Wednesday, April 20. MU completed the series sweep with a 10-3 victory on their home field. 

SPARTAN STATS: 
  • Manchester senior Aidan Stevens (Rensselaer, Ind., Rensselaer Central) hit a walk-off home run to give Manchester the 11-10 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. During Saturday's doubleheader, Stevens hit 3-8 at the plate with five runs scored, three RBI, and was hit by pitch three times. 
  • Carter Hooks (Rochester, Ind., Rochester) earned his fourth win of the season on the mound for Manchester. Hooks pitched 2.1 innings of relief on Saturday, holding the Beavers to two hits while striking out three batters. 
  • Manchester took a 5-0 lead after the first six innings of game two of Saturday's doubleheader. The Spartans would add two more runs in the home half of the eighth inning following two RBI singles by Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind. , Monroe Central ) and Austin Knowles (Nassau, Bahamas, Athens Christian (Ga.)). 
  • Ty Layson (Fort Wayne, Ind. , Homestead) threw a complete game on the mound for the Spartans, holding the Beavers to just three hits with no earned runs and five strikeouts. 
  • During game two, Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) hit .750 with two RBI and an extra base hit. 
  • Bluffton got on the scoreboard first during Wednesday's game following a sacrifice fly to give them a 1-0 lead. Harrison Pittsford (Ellettsville, Ind., Edgewood) hit his ninth home run of the season to left field in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at one run apiece. 
  • Manchester extended their lead 4-2 after six innings. Bluffton would bring the game within one run following an RBI double to left center field in the top of the eighth inning. Manchester would answer, scoring six more runs in the eighth inning to secure the 10-3 victory. 
  • Zach White (Logansport, Ind., Logansport) went 3-4 at the plate for the Spartans, scoring one run with two RBI. 
  • Mitchell Baker (Plainfield, Ind., Plainfield) also had a successful day at the plate, hitting .500 with one run scored and two RBI. 

UP NEXT: 
  • Manchester will host the rival Ravens of Anderson University for a three-game series on Gratz Field on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. 
  • First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
