Spartans Go 1-2 In Three Game Series Against Anderson

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester Spartans hosted the rival Ravens of Anderson University on Gratz Field for a three-game conference series on Saturday, April 22 and Sunday, April 23. 

Anderson took Saturday's doubleheader by final scores of 8-4 and 10-8 in 11 innings. The Spartans won Sunday's game by a final score of 10-7. 

SPARTAN STATS
  • The Ravens would lead 6-0 through the top of the fourth inning of Saturday's opening game. Manchester would cut Anderson's lead to three runs following two doubles by Austin Knowles (Nassau, Bahamas, Athens Christian (Ga.)) and Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind. , Monroe Central ). AU would tack on three more runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take game one by a final score of 8-4. 
  • Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning in game two, the Spartans pieced together a rally in the fifth and sixth innings. A home run by Harrison Pittsford (Ellettsville, Ind., Edgewood) and a two-run home run by Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind. , Monroe Central ) highlighted the middle two innings for the Black and Gold. 
  • The Ravens would tie the game at 7-7 in the eighth inning. After neither side was able to push over a decisive run, the game moved into extra innings.
  • AU would score a single run in the top of the tenth inning, but the Spartans would tie the game back up at 8-8 following at an RBI single by Manchester senior Aidan Stevens (Rensselaer, Ind., Rensselaer Central). Stevens would finish the three-game series going 4-13 at the plate with five runs scored, four RBI,  and a home run. 
  • Anderson would put two more runs on the scoreboard in the 11th. The Spartans were unable to rally in the home half of the inning.
  • Anderson took another 6-0 lead during Sunday's game. A three-run home run in the fifth inning by Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) helped to bring the Spartans within one run. On the day, Hanes went 2-5 at the plate with four RBI. 
  • Manchester would score another five runs in the sixth and eighth innings in route to a 10-7 victory on Sunday afternoon. 
  • Manchester junior Mitchell Baker (Plainfield, Ind., Plainfield)also had a successful day the plate for the Black and Gold, hitting .750 with three runs scored and three RBI. Baker had an extra base hit and a stolen base on Sunday. 
  • Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) earned his second win of the season on the mound for the Black and Gold. Holley pitched four innings of relief work for the Spartans, holding the Ravens to just one hit with three strikeouts.

  • Manchester will travel to Hanover College to take on the Panthers in another Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader on Saturday, April 29. 
  • Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Hanover, Ind.
