Baseball Splits Weekend Doubleheaders Against Hanover and Franklin

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Manchester University baseball team split two HCAC doubleheaders against the Hanover Panthers and Franklin Grizzlies on April 28 - 29. 

On Saturday, Manchester took game one by a final score of 7-4. The Panthers of Hanover College took game two 16-7. 

On Sunday, the Spartans split with the Franklin College Grizzlies after falling 11-6 in game one and taking game two by a final score of 12-5.

Manchester at Hanover
  • The Spartans got on the scoreboard first in the opening game against Hanover, scoring four runs in the first two innings. A two-run homerun by Harrison Pittsford (Ellettsville, Ind., Edgewood) highlighted the inning for the Black and Gold. The Panthers would put together a rally in the third and fourth innings to tie the score at four runs apiece, but MU would answer, scoring three more runs while holding off the Panthers to take game one by a final score of 7-4.
  • Manchester fifth year Carter Hooks (Rochester, Ind., Rochester) earned his fifth win of the season on the mound for the Black and Gold. Hooks scattered 11 hits with four strikeouts in seven innings of work in game one against the Panthers. 
  • Fellow fifth year Zach White (Logansport, Ind., Logansport) pitched two innings of relief for Manchester, earning a save after holding Hanover to two hits with two strikeouts and no runs scored.
  • In game two, the Spartans took a 7-2 advantage after five innings. Hanover rallied, using a seven run eighth inning to claim the 16-7 victory.
  • Four Spartans hit home runs during game two, including Zach White, Joel Kennedy, Harrison Pittsford, and Austin Knowles
  • On the day, Pittsford went 2-9 at the plate with three runs scored, three RBI and three extra base hits, including two home runs. Pittsford has 12 homers so far this season.
 Manchester vs. Franklin
  • A two-run home run by Manchester senior Aidan Stevens (Rensselaer, Ind., Rensselaer Central) in the home half of the second inning gave MU the early 4-1 lead in game one against Franklin on Sunday. Franklin would answer with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning to cut the Spartans' lead to one run. The Grizzlies would score eight more runs as the Franklin pitchers would hold Manchester to just seven hits on the day in route to an 11-6 victory to take game one. 
  • Three Spartans had stolen bases in game one for the Black and Gold, including three stolen bases by Harrison Pittsford
  • Manchester scored nine unanswered runs through the first five innings. Two two-run home runs by Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind. , Monroe Central ) and Jared Holley (Wabash, Ind., Wabash) highlighted the first five innings for the Black and Gold. 
  • The Spartans would keep the Grizzlies off the board until the seventh inning. The Spartans weren't done yet, as MU tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning following an RBI double by Aidan Stevens and an RBI single by Zach White  to take game two 12-5. 
  • On the day, Stevens went 4-5 at the plate with three runs, three RBI, one home run, and a walk. 
  • Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) earned his second win of the season on the mound for MU. Hanes allowed six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in a complete nine innings of work.

  • The Black and Gold will host the Mount St. Joseph Lions for another conference doubleheader during Senior Day on Saturday, May 6. 
  • First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Gratz Field.
