NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Manchester University hosted the visiting Mount St. Joseph Lions at Gratz Field for a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) doubleheader on Saturday, May 6. At the conclusion of game two, the Spartans baseball team honored its senior class of
Dane Fife, Cole Filson, Peyton Jackson, Brady Perez, and
Aidan Stevens with an on-field ceremony.
The Black and Gold improved to 21-16, 12-8 after sweeping the Lions on Saturday. The Spartans took game one by a final score of 7-4 and won game two 9-6.
SPARTAN STATS
- Manchester scored three unanswered runs in the first three innings of the opening game on Saturday afternoon. MSJ would score their first run of the day in the top of the fourth inning following a home run. A three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning would cut the Spartans' lead to three runs, but the Black and Gold would score two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure a 7-4 victory in game one.
- Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell) went a perfect 3-3 at the plate in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, hitting two doubles with two RBI.
- Carter Hooks (Rochester, Ind., Rochester) earned his sixth win of the season on the mound for MU. Hooks scattered six hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.
- In game two, the Spartans took an early 7-2 lead after three innings. The Lions would cut Manchester's lead to one run in the eighth inning. The Black and Gold would score two more runs and hang on to win game two 9-6.
- Brady Perez (Rochester, Ind., Rochester) went 2-3 from the plate in game two, scoring one run with two RBI.
- Three Spartans had extra base hits in game two, including two doubles by Perez, a triple by Aidan Stevens (Rensselaer, Ind., Rensselaer Central) and a home run by Austin Knowles (Nassau, Bahamas, Athens Christian (Ga.)).
- Manchester first-year Ty Layson (Fort Wayne, Ind. , Homestead) threw 7.0 innings on the mound for Manchester in game two, giving up five hits with two earned runs and three strikeouts.

- The Spartans will travel to Terre Haute for their regular season finale against the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers on Sunday, May 7.
