HAUTE, Ind. - The Spartans defeated the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers by a final score of 67-52 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday, January 24 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Bryant Smith (West Lafayette, Ind., Harrison) became the 33rd person in Manchester men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points during Wednesday night's victory. The junior guard from West Lafayette scored 22 points to boost his career total to 1,006.
The host Engineers kept pace with the Spartans through the opening 13 minutes of action on Wednesday night.
Rose-Hulman and Manchester were tied at 18 with 7:28 on the clock, but the Spartans would answer with a 15-4 run to take a 33-22 lead heading into halftime.
The Black and Gold extended their lead to 16 thanks to a three-pointer by
Zach Sawyer (Columbus, Ohio, Bishop Watterson) with 10:23 on the clock in the second quarter.
Rose-Hulman battled back to cut the Spartans' lead to five with six minutes remaining in the second half. Manchester would hold off the
Fightin' Engineers and go on a 14-4 run to snap
Rose-Hulman's five game winning streak and secure the 67-52 victory.
For the game, three Spartans scored in double-digits against
Rose-Hulman, including
Bryant Smith who shot 4-8 from three-point range to lead all scorers with 22 points on Wednesday night.
Zach Sawyer collect his third consecutive double-double after finishing the night with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Sawyer also had two blocks and two steals on the evening.
Logan Willoughby (Greenwood, Ind., Whiteland Community) scored 12 points with four assists, while
Coy Hampton (Park Forest, Ill., Crete Monee) added seven points and eight rebounds.
Manchester men's basketball improved to 11-7, 8-3 HCAC following Wednesday night's win. Up next, the Spartans will host
Earlham College for Senior Day in Stauffer-Wolfe Arena on Saturday, January 27. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
