North Manchester, Ind. - The Manchester University women's soccer team turned in a resilient defensive performance on Saturday afternoon but fell 1–0 to visiting Berea College at Good Field. Despite holding Berea scoreless through the opening half and limiting quality looks for much of the match, a single second-half strike decided the outcome in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
Berea managed 12 total shots to Manchester's three, with both sides generating limited offensive rhythm in a physical midfield battle. The Spartans' defensive structure—anchored by Rayne Bell, Delaney Kelly, and Jameela Hydre Yusoff—kept Berea from converting early chances. Goalkeeper Reagan Claus was steady once again, recording five saves across 90 minutes and keeping Manchester in contention throughout.
The match's lone goal came less than two minutes into the second half, when Berea found the back of the net in the 47th minute for her ninth tally of the season. Manchester pressed forward in the final stages, earning a corner in the 61st minute and nearly leveling the score when Layla Huneck forced a save from the Berea keeper in the 82nd minute. Despite the late push, the Spartans couldn't find an equalizer.
Erin Grant, Abigail Kohler, and Huneck each registered a shot for Manchester, with Grant and Huneck putting theirs on goal. The Spartans were edged in corners (1–5) but matched Berea's physicality throughout, committing just seven fouls to Berea's 13 in a tightly contested matchup.
With the result, Manchester moved to 1–10–1 overall and 0–4–0 in HCAC play, while Berea improved to 7–5–1 (2–2–0 HCAC). The Spartans will look to build on their strong defensive showing as they continue conference action next week.
