Spartans Offense Explodes for 14 Runs at Hope College


Holland, Mich. - The Manchester University Baseball team traveled up to Holland, Michigan to take on the Hope College Flying Dutchmen in a mid-week match up.

The Spartan offense lit up the scoreboard after being down big to come back and take the victory in the 9th inning after a Havin Gleason Sac Fly.

Manchester 14, Hope 13

Max Horner (Goshen, Ind., Northridge) drove in four runs on three hits to lead the Spartans past Hope College 14-13 on Tuesday. Horner singled in the fifth scoring two, doubled in the eighth scoring two, and doubled in the third scoring one.

Hope College got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Stratman singled to center field, and Bennets hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

The Black & Gold made the score 4-2 in the top of the fifth after Horner singled, scoring two runs, and Joel Kennedy (Mooreland, Ind., Monroe Central) doubled, scoring one run.

Hope College flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on seven hits to take the lead, 7-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a solo home run to center field by Kinnie that drove in one.

Manchester tied the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a double by Gavin Gleason (Brookston, Ind., Delphi Community), a double by Rocco Hanes (Ossian, Ind., Norwell), and an error.

Hope College flipped the game again in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs on four hits to take the lead, 13-8. The biggest blow in the inning was a grand slam to right field by Bennets  that drove in four.

The Spartans tied the game in the top of the eighth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Gleason, a double by Horner, a double by Hanes, and a sacrifice fly by Vian Mariani (South Bend, Ind., John Adams).

A sacrifice fly by Gleason gave Manchester the lead, 14-13, in the top of the ninth.

Jackson Todor (Fort Wayne, Ind., Homestead) stepped on the mound first for Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan. The righty allowed 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking none. Jake McGrath (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll) tossed two innings of shutout ball for Spring 2025 Manchester Spartan in relief. The righty gave up one hit, striking out none and walking one.

MU collected 13 hits in the game. Mitchell Cobb (Pendleton, Ind., Pendleton Heights), Gleason, Hanes, Kennedy, and Michael Dierckman (Fort Wayne, Ind., Carroll) each collected multiple hits for the Spartans. Dierckman stole three bases and the Spartans as a team collected six stolen bases for the game.
