Spartans close strong 2012 campaign

RICHMOND, IND. – Fourth-seeded Manchester University gave top-seeded Earlham College all it could handle in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinal round tournament action Thursday, Nov. 1.

A pair of second half goals broke up a close-knit affair, sending Earlham to a 2-0 win. The first occurred just over three minutes in off a cross kick in front of the Spartans' goal, while the second was scored on a breakaway in the 81st minute. MU, closing the year with a 9-7-3 record, ended with 10 shot attempts with sophomore midfielder Katelyn Barta (Griffith, Ind.), junior midfielder Laura Jenkins (Sellersburg, Ind.) and sophomore defender Diane McAfee (Fort Wayne, Ind.) each recording two tries.

The Spartans held the Quakers (12-5-1) scoreless in the first half. The hosts held a slim 7-5 shots advantage with sophomore goalkeeper Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.). Willmann ended the match with seven saves in the face of 15 Earlham shot attempts.

NOTES: Manchester wrapped up its first winning season since 2006 and its first HCAC tournament appearance since 2008. … Barta wound up as the team leader with seven goals, five assists and 19 points, while Jenkins' 37 shots topped MU. Willmann led the defense with 10 shutouts, the most in a season since the 2003 squad had 11.
