Franklin tops Black and Gold

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Senior forward David House (Elkhart, Ind.) continued an impressive recent run of play, leading three Manchester University players in double figures to highlight an 86-65 loss to Franklin Sunday, Jan. 13.

House compiled 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked a shot for the Spartans (4-11 overall, 1-7 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference). Coach Brad Nadborne's team also received double-figure scoring games from sophomore forward Jon Thompson (Rushville, Ind.) who had 14 points and sophomore guard Caleb Jackson (New Castle, Ind.) who tallied 11 points, hitting a pair of three-pointers, to go along with a blocked shot.

MU took a 5-4 lead early after sophomore guard Grant Newlin (Muncie, Ind.) drained a three-pointer at the 18:39 mark of the first half. The visitors took off on a 7-0 run from that point and didn't trail the rest of the game. The Black and Gold remained within double digits until Franklin (10-5 overall, 5-3 HCAC) scored 15 of the first half's final 23 points to lead 49-35 at the break.

The visitors also had a balanced scoring attack. Senior forward Erwin Gunner led four Grizzlies in double figures with 23 points which included a perfect five-for-five afternoon from outside the arc.

Manchester University wraps up the first half of the 2012-13 league campaign with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Bluffton University's Sommer Center Wednesday, Jan. 16. The Spartans' match-up with the Beavers begins a three-game road trip.

NOTES – House, averaging 17.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game over the last four contests, has seen his season points per game average rise nearly three (6.4-9.0) and his rebounds per game average jump nearly one full board (4.9-5.8) in the span. … Newlin, with two assists and two steals, upped his multiple-assist game total to 11 and multiple-steal game mark to seven. … Thompson's point total highlighted the third time this year he's scored double figures in back-to-back games.
