Spartans take HCAC leaders to wire

Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – A strong field goal shooting night helped Manchester University give Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Rose-Hulman a scare on its own floor Thursday, Jan. 24.

Coach Brad Nadborne's Spartans (4-14 overall, 1-10 HCAC) hit better than 42 percent and limited the Fightin' Engineers (16-2, 10-1) to less than 30 percent from the floor. However, R-H eked out a 55-53 win behind a solid night at the charity stripe, hitting on 17-of-21 attempts compared to MU's nine-of-13.

Sophomore guard Greg Flores (Hammond, Ind.) topped the scoring list for MU with 13 points. He also joined fellow sophomores Grant Newlin (Muncie, Ind.) and Jon Thompson (Rushville, Ind.) with a tri-team high two assists. Sophomore forward Silas Sims (Hope, Ind.) narrowly missed double figures in scoring with nine to go with a co-team high four rebounds, sharing that lead with freshman forward Jared Schrock (Logansport, Ind.).

The Black and Gold scored 12 of the game's first 20 points and built their advantage to as much as seven (17-10) with 9:24 to go in the half. Rose-Hulman answered with an 18-11 run to tie it at 28-28 at halftime. The home side broke away from a 36-35 edge in the second half to go up by 10 at several points, but MU rallied with a 7-0 stretch after being down 54-44 and had the ball with 38 seconds left but a strong three-point look rimmed out.

Manchester University returns home to face Hanover Saturday, Jan. 26. Tipoff is 3 p.m. inside Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
