Box Score NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Strong offensive pressure from the Manchester University offense throughout the 90 minutes Tuesday, Sept. 2, couldn't faze Trine University goalkeeper Skyler Reed.
The Spartans, playing in front of a vocal home crowd during their season opener, out-shot their in-state non-conference rivals by an overall 19-11 count. However, each of their five shot-on-goal tries was thwarted by Reed.
MU starting net minder Emily Willmann, a senior from Montpelier, Ind., was equal to the task from the Thunder offense for over 70 minutes. However, 30 seconds into the 70th minute, Trine junior midfielder Jamie McCarrell hit a lofted shot to the left of Willmann that just barely went over her fingertips, off the crossbar and into the Spartans' net. Willmann closed the afternoon with five saves.
Three Black and Gold players paced the offense. Junior forward Brandy Crouse (Cleves, Ohio), senior midfielder Breanne McLane (Westville, Ind.) and senior forward/midfielder Bridgette Rowe (La Quinta, Calif.) each fired off four total shot tries.
The Spartans continue a three-match home stand with the opening clash of the 2014 Raven-Spartan Classic Friday, Sept 5. They take on Blackburn College of Illinois at 6 p.m. at Spartan Field.
