MU gives Hanover stern test

Box Score

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Freshman midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) compiled her team-leading fifth goal, leading Manchester University against Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference unbeaten Hanover College Saturday, Oct. 10.

Birmingham's score, coming off a well-placed corner into the box from the foot of sophomore midfielder Kelsey Ropp (Freeland, Mich.), was headed to the left corner of the Panthers' net for a 1-1 tie in the 57th minute. MU's defense kept the score that way against the potent HC offense up until the final 10 minutes when a pair of goals for the visitors sent them to a 3-1 decision.

Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio), throughout the 90 minutes, proved her mettle in the face of a 38-3 shots lead for the visitors. She knocked away 11 more Panther shot on goal attempts for her third double-digit total in the last five matches.

MU (3-7-1 overall, 1-1-1 HCAC) continues league play Wednesday, Oct. 14. Bluffton University of Ohio is the guest of the Black and Gold for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

NOTE: Birmingham's second period strike resumed an impressive run. She's scored four of her five goals, recorded nine points and registered a goal-winning game over her last three matches.
