Box Score OLIVET, MICH. – It took Manchester University's final at-bat to settle a non-conference clash with Olivet College that featured 23 runs and 28 hits Thursday, March 26.
The Spartans, winning for the fifth time in the last six games, plated five scores in the top of the seventh, overturning a 10-8 deficit on OC's field in route to a 13-10 decision. Back-to-back run-producing doubles from junior third baseman Jessica Chorak (Hammond, Ind.) and freshman second baseman Laurren Ladwig (Crown Point, Ind.), with Chorak's two-bagger driving in the eventual winning score as part of two RBIs, highlighted the comeback along with a solo home run from freshman outfielder Mallorie Jennings (Bourbon, Ind.).
MU got out to a quick start against Comet starting pitcher Ashlynn Grubbs, tallying four in the first and three in the second, as Ladwig, as part of a five-RBI contest, hammered a grand slam in the Spartans' first at-bat. However, Grubb settled down and surrendered only one run on four hits from the third through sixth innings, and the home side posted eight runs in the bottom of the second for a 10-7 lead.
The visitors' bullpen kept them close, slamming the door on OC's offense with just five hits allowed over the final five and two-thirds innings. Senior Ashlea Nash (Gas City, Ind.), appearing for the eighth time this season, gave up only two safeties and struck out two over the last three frames to pick up her fourth win.
Manchester University takes a 5-6 record on the road to its 2015 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener Sunday, March 29, against Hanover. First pitch is 1 p.m. at HC's Brouillette Field.
NOTES: Senior shortstop Emily Willmann (Montpelier, Ind.) upped a pair of impressive personal streaks at Olivet. Her personal hitting streak moved to 11 games straight, while she's reached base in 17 consecutive contests going back to 2014 … Willmann and Deisler both closed in on the .400 batting average mark. Willmann's two-for-three, two-runs scored, two-walk, two-RBI afternoon, upped her to .394, while Deisler's three-for-five, three-runs scored, one-RBI effort moved her to .393.
