Spartans, Huntington play close-knit battle

Box Score

NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – Freshman goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) worked her way through a 19-7 shots disadvantage against visiting Huntington University to help keep her Manchester University teammates level throughout a non-conference clash Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Smith's six saves, as part of a solid defensive effort, placed the host Spartans (2-4) in a scoreless draw with the Foresters (6-3) until the waning moments at Spartan Soccer Field. With less than four minutes remaining, HU broke away on a two-on-one into the home side's penalty box, and, with Smith moving in to knock the ball out of harm's way, the Foresters' junior midfielder Olivia Knispel just managed to get away a shot to the left of her diving reach that trickled into the net for the match's lone goal.

Seven different Black and Gold players got off shot attempts in front of their home crowd. The underclasswoman trio of sophomore defender Jaclyn Scialdone (Noblesville, Ind.), sophomore midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) and freshman midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) forced three saves from the Huntington University goalkeeping duo of Autumn Demott and Toby Carman.

MU continues a home and away week with a trip to Ohio Athletic Conference member Wilmington College Saturday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is 4 p.m.
