Shutout keeper effort lifts MU

Box Score

SOUTH BEND, IND. – The freshman combination of Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) and Cami Holford (Valparaiso, Ind.) pieced together their first collegiate clean sheet as part of a 1-0 Manchester University win Saturday, Sept. 5.

Holford and Smith each registered a pair of saves in the face of an 8-7 shots edge for the host St. Mary's College Belles. Smith earned the victory due to fellow freshman Mariam Aly (Giza, Egypt) striking her first Black and Gold score in the 38th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder/forward Bethany Molnar (Chesterton, Ind.).

Molnar joined sophomore forward Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) in the team shots lead, as they each ended 90 minutes with two. They were also part of a trio with one shot on goal to go along with Aly.

The Spartans (1-1) begin the home portion of their 2015 schedule Saturday, Sept. 12, against Ohio Athletic Conference member Heidelberg College as part of the Anderson University-MU Raven-Spartan Classic.

NOTES: Saturday's win ended a .500 opening week against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association competition. Trine University stopped MU 3-1 Sept. 1 in their opener … The outcome at Junior Irish Club's Airport Field #6 gave the Spartans a slight 4-3 edge in the last seven series' meetings.
