AU edges Black and Gold in HCAC meeting

Box Score

ANDERSON, IND. – Sophomore forward/midfielder Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) and junior midfielder Courtney Hersick (Plymouth, Ind.) combined for seven shot attempts, and sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) compiled her second successive double-digit save outing, highlighting a Heartland Collegiate Athletic road match for Manchester University Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Hersick's four shots, all of which were aimed directly at Anderson University goalkeeper Rebecca Roell's end of Macholtz Stadium along with one that found the back of the Ravens' net, topped the Spartans (0-8 overall, 0-2 HCAC) in a tight-knit 3-1 loss. After AU fired off a scoring strike in the first 10 minutes, Smith and her counterpart kept the scoreboard quiet until Hersick launched her fifth goal of the season in the 62nd minute for a 1-1 tie. From there, the home side answered back with a pair of tallies off the foot of Taylor Hurley in the 69th and 82nd minutes to seal the decision.

Birmingham closed her evening with three shot attempts, one of which was on goal. Smith turned in 11 saves in the midst of a 33-11 AU strike advantage.

The Spartans return to Good Field at the Spartan Soccer Complex Saturday, Oct. 8, beginning back-to-back home matches with Rose-Hulman's visit. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
