Box Score Huntington College, beginning a season-long road trip due field conditions on its campus, tallied an early first half goal and made it stand with strong goalkeeping down the stretch for a narrow 1-0 non-conference victory over Manchester University.
The Spartans, despite slipping to 1-4, turned in three more shot-on-goal attempts than the Foresters (4-1-2) but HC keeper Drew Mattingly kept his net clean. The senior midfield tandem of Cody Freels (Auburn, Ind.) and Dian Radev (Burgas, Bulgaria) each had breakaway chances in the final five minutes of regulation but were turned away. Mattingly ended the match with nine saves, while MU senior Grant Noakes (LaPorte, Ind.) was just as tough on the Huntington offense, especially late in the first half, by turning away five shot-on-goal attempts.
The match's lone score came in the ninth minute. Huntington sophomore midfielder Yordan Rivera weaved his way through the Black and Gold defense and sent a shot just past Noakes' reach into the right corner.
Huntington held a 24-15 shots edge. Radev and fellow senior midfielder/forward Andrew Gray (Anderson, Ind.) combined for seven Spartan tries.
Manchester begins a four-match road stretch Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, in Naperville, Ill. Coach Dave Good's squad will face St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes Fontbonne and Webster, respectively, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
