Black and Gold toppled in series finales

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Big innings for the home-standing Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers proved to be the difference in both ends of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday, March 29.

Looking to keep its league record unblemished, Manchester University (11-5 overall, 4-2 HCAC) was stopped by a home team offense that tallied 13 runs from the third through fifth innings of game one and overcame a 3-0 second inning deficit in the nightcap by scoring in the third through eighth frames of a 13-6 decision at Art Nehf Field. Despite the two defeats that gave the weekend series to the hosts, the two-time defending HCAC champs stood just a game-and-half behind league-leading Bluffton University of Ohio and a half-game behind R-H for second place through two weekends of conference play.

Senior third baseman Jordan Nieman (Michigan City, Ind.) led the Spartans' offensive attack. He went three-for-three in the opener with three doubles and two RBIs and came back with a pair of hits in game two. Senior shortstop Trevor Kimm (Anderson, Ind.) added a two-hit game in the nightcap with a double and two RBIs.

MU begins a span of six games in seven days Tuesday, March 31. They host HCAC rival Anderson University in a doubleheader at Gratz Field. First pitch is 1 p.m.

NOTES: Nieman's effort moved his personal hit string to 19 straight games and on-base streak to 20 in a row … Sophomore first baseman Tailur Szarenski (Bluffton, Ind.) tacked on two games to his on-base skein, pushing it to 20.
