Second half comeback dashes Black and Gold hopes

Box Score

FRANKLIN, IND. – Junior defender/midfielder/forward Tod Oram (Crown Point, Ind.) deposited his third goal of the 2016 season, highlighting a mid-week road trip to Franklin College Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Oram's goal, off assists from sophomore midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) and sophomore forward Drake DeWitt (Columbia City, Ind.), put Manchester University in strong shape early on Vaught Field at Branigan Stadium. However, the Grizzlies responded after a scoreless first 45 minutes with three scores including what turned out to be a match-winning own goal in the 81st minute to side-step the Spartans (7-4-2 overall, 1-3 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) 3-1.

Niederhelman and Oram managed a combined eight of MU's 13 total shots, with Niederhelman, who ranks second in the league in the category, compiling five. Junior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) posted three saves against FC's offensive attack.

The Spartans, looking to develop a late-season surge on the loop standings, take a key road trip to Transylvania University Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is 3:30 p.m. at TU's Athletic Complex between the Pioneers, part of a three-way tie for fourth, and the Black and Gold who are tied for seventh.
