Box Score 2 HANOVER, IND. – Junior left fielder Chad Schultz (Fair Oaks, Ind.) and senior catcher Elliott Ford (Rome City, Ind.) each compiled multiple-hit efforts in game one of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference twinbill Saturday, April 16.
Schultz doubled twice and drove in a run from his lead-off spot as part of a three-hit contest, and Ford also produced a two-bagger during a two-hit effort. Even with those outputs, the Black and Gold fell 6-5 to the host Panthers, leaving 13 runners on base which included two-or-more in four of their last five at-bats.
The nightcap saw HC (7-21 overall, 4-12 HCAC) break open a close-knit 4-2 count after three frames by scoring in each of their final five plate attempts as part of a 10-3 win. MU (15-13, 9-6 HCAC) was shackled to just six hits, with only one being an extra base knock, by home team starter David Herrmann. The freshman went the distance, allowing just one earned run and striking out four.
Manchester University, despite the weekend series loss, remained only a half-game behind Transylvania University and Earlham College for second place on the league standings. They wrap up a four-game HCAC road swing Tuesday, April 19, with a 4:15 p.m. first pitch at Anderson University.
NOTES: Senior shortstop Sean Knepper (Bremen, Ind.) managed to extend his on-base streak to 35 games … The doubleheader defeat ended a modest three-game win skein and marked a second successive weekend series loss.
