North Manchester, Ind. - In a season defined by dominance, consistency and record-breaking performances, Manchester University's Gavin Byerly has been named the 2025–26 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) Male Athlete of the Year. The honor caps off one of the most remarkable individual campaigns in school and conference history, as Byerly asserted himself as the premier distance athlete in the region — and among the best in the nation.

Byerly's excellence spanned all three seasons — cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field — earning First Team All-HCAC honors in each while sweeping HCAC Most Valuable Performer and Distance MVP accolades across the board. His ability to compete — and win — at the highest level made him the clear choice for the conference's top individual honor.

Byerly's fall campaign set the tone for the year, anchoring his legacy with one of the most historic performances in Manchester distance history. He captured the HCAC Cross Country Championship, earning HCAC MVP honors, and followed it up with an outstanding postseason.

At the regional level, Byerly earned All-Region honors and was crowned the Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year, becoming the first runner in Manchester University history to receive the prestigious award. He carried that momentum to the national stage, delivering a standout race at the NCAA Championships to earn First Team All-American honors.

Transitioning seamlessly into the winter season, Byerly continued his dominance on the track. At the HCAC Indoor Championships, he delivered a commanding triple victory, winning the 800 meters, mile, and 3000 meters, showcasing both speed and endurance across distances.

His performances secured him First Team All-HCAC honors along with HCAC Indoor Distance MVP recognition. On the regional stage, he once again stood out, earning All-Region honors and solidifying his consistency as one of the top distance athletes in the Midwest.

Byerly also left his mark in the record books during indoor competition. He set school records in the 800 meters and mile, while ranking second all-time at Manchester in the 3000 meters and third all-time in the 5000 meters.

His performances extended beyond the school level into the conference record books, where he now holds the HCAC indoor mile record while ranking sixth all-time in the 800 meters, second all-time in the 3000 meters, and third all-time in the 5000 meters.

The spring season brought more of the same dominance. Byerly once again swept the distance events at the HCAC Outdoor Championships, winning the 800 meters, 1500 meters, and 3000-meter steeplechase, completing a perfect championship season across all three sports.

He earned First Team All-HCAC honors and was named HCAC Outdoor Distance MVP, completing a rare trifecta of MVP awards across cross country, indoor, and outdoor track.

Byerly continued his success at the regional level, earning All-Region honors once again, with additional recognition expected as the postseason concludes.

In Manchester's outdoor record books, he climbed into the top tier across multiple events, ranking fourth all-time in the 800 meters, third all-time in the 1500 meters, and third all-time in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Within the HCAC, he also sits among the conference's all-time greats, ranking fourth all-time in the outdoor 800 meters, third all-time in the 1500 meters, and third all-time in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

Byerly's 2025–26 season will be remembered not only for its accolades, but for its historic significance. From becoming Manchester's first Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year in cross country to earning NCAA All-American honors and rewriting record books at every level, he delivered a year rarely seen in HCAC history.

His relentless drive, versatility across distances, and ability to perform on the biggest stages made him a standout among standouts — and a deserving recipient of the HCAC Male Athlete of the Year award.
