Box Score DELAWARE, OHIO – A Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference – North Coast Athletic Conference clash followed a back-and-forth script Monday, Sept. 17.
Manchester University, looking to break out of a rough 0-6 start, gave the host Battling Bishops all they could handle on their home Jay Martin Soccer Complex field. Senior forward/midfielder Maranda Birmingham's (Kouts, Ind.) steal and empty-netter, good for a program-leading second goal of the year, answered a home strike in the second minute for a 1-1 tie that made its way into the early portion of the second half.
Classmate Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio), adding another double-digit save contest to an already impressive career total, tallied 12 saves in the midst of a 40-2 Ohio Wesleyan shot advantage. However, the home side broke up the draw with successful offensive strikes in the 52nd and 75th minutes to salt away a 3-1 decision.
The Spartans non-conference schedule continues Wednesday, Sept. 19. They take a trip to Kalamazoo College for a 7 p.m. match against the Hornets at MacKenzie Field.
