* Nelson "Nels" Potter competed at Mount Morris College in Illinois before the school's closure and merger with Manchester in the 1930s.
* Potter earnred 5 varsity letters during his collegiate career.
* Played for 4 seasons in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut for St. Louis Cardinals in 1936.
* Spent 14 seasons in the major leagues, pitching for the Cardinals, Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, and Boston Braves.
* Won 92 games during his career, posted a career ERA of 3.99 and struck out 747 career batters.
